Stairs on Telegraph Hill

I hardly ever know when I shoot that the image will be great in black and white. I see the scene, find it interesting and shoot. But for some shots, like this one, it just begs to be converted. It is what happened with this stairs leading up to the top pf Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. I shot it as HDR. I like the strong lines of the tree and street lamp, and the stairs leading to the opening in the woods. But the red of the brick stairs and the green of the tree, over saturated with tone mapping, were taking away from those graphic lines.
